Midnight, Earth

Midnight, Earth!
And no new day
Beyond the waterfall of time;
Only bone-dry rocky
Riverbeds
To dust your tongue
And rust your eyes.
Midnight, Earth!
And no new sun
To rise and light your wicked path;
Only brooding, silent
Shadow-shapes
To beat the drums
And cheat your soul.
Midnight, Earth!
And no new child
To chart the course and

Bear the torch;
Only disenchanted
Shells of dream,

The lies of youth,
The price of truth.
